Urgent Matters

We know utopia does not exist. That said, western culture broadly, and America specifically, should be doing better. It ain't, and the future doesn't look good. Much of the cultural dysfunction pre-dated Trump's run for president. However, once inaugurated, few could have predicted the totality of Trump's debasement. In hindsight, it was a perfect storm of worst case scenarios: Just when America/western culture most needed a president to lead by example, extolling virtues likes morality and truth. Trump rejected crap like that, then added the debasement of integrity, facts, patriotism as well as debasing every kind of individual and institution.

President Biden has been in office for over just 24-months, but high stakes pressure is already on with the midterms on the horizon. I imagine there is a behind-the-scenes fight for control of the Republican Party's soul. Now that Trump has legitimized their authoritarian and racist ideologies, the Republican party - big money and special interests - can focus on the game-behind-the-game-behind-the-game for its control. A key component of that Republican game will be the recruitment of a polished Trump - a communicator with an intellect, a candidate who can skilfully disguise the Republican authoritarian and racist ideologies.

The person I envision Republicans want is someone like C.S. Lewis wrote about in the Screwtape Letters. "I live in the Managerial Age, in a world of “Admin.” The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid “dens of crime” that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps or labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern."

The United States of America needs a third party.
